Friday 25th September- bike ***** sunny – Passerelle circuit, Lac de Montynard – 10 n/miles, 4.5hrs out, 23.24 kts max.

A grey start but sun soon burnt it off :) Still feeling groggy with my cold so had a morning off exercises but we went for our bike ride anyway and started by booking the boat crossing for the 12 o’clock La Mira crossing :) It was great on the boat chugging up the middle of the lake for 15 minutes. The staff were very helpful and the Captain himself lifted our bikes onto the front of the boat! Most unlike we are used to with the grumpy ferry man at Felixstowe Ferry! When we got over to the quay at Mayres Savel he lifted our bikes off, passed them up to us and told us how to start the bike route. We were shocked at how hard it was!! There was a lot of extreme up and down and the paths were very stony. We walked a lot but it was well worth it because the Himalayan Bridges were amazing :) We ate our lunch on the rocks before starting on the first bridge – the Passerelle du Drac. Up until that point we had seen nobody but two older walkers were braving the bridge from the other side and three girl hikers sat and ate their lunch just behind us. We set off on our bikes but as soon as Mag could see the green sparkling water underneath the metal grid of the bridge it all seemed to fast and scary so she got off and walked the rest! It is better to walk actually because you see more that way. When we got to the other side the terrain if anything got worse and was either stony or rutted dry waterfall! There were also some steps! We hauled out bikes up it all and were relieved to find a wonderful road down towards the Plan de Eau but that soon stopped and we had to turn off and go uphill again. Then it flattened out a little and turned into forestry paths which were wonderful to cycle on and you only had to avoid tree roots. There were two dramatic viewing points along that stretch with views up the length of the beautiful lake. The Passerelle de l’Ebrun was as spectacular as the Drac and we crossed over the narrow, deep gorge on that and found a picnic table in the sun to eat our banana and chocolate bar. The bike back from there was very easy and on either good track or made up road which was quite a relief!! We did 8 ½ hard miles and were away from the van for 4 hours. A brilliant day but exhausting!! We had a cuppa, rest and read then good old Lidl lasagne for tea. We were in bed by 10 – shattered!!
